Area rugs in Nairobi face a unique challenge: red dust. Between the construction activity, matatu traffic, and Kenya's naturally dusty dry seasons, your rug picks up more than it would in other climates. The good news? Modern polypropylene rugs — like the ones we sell — are designed to handle exactly this. Here's how to keep yours looking great.
Weekly Vacuuming
This is the single most important thing you can do. Vacuum your rug at least once a week — twice during dusty seasons (January–March and July–September). Use a standard upright or cylinder vacuum. Don't skip the underside: flip the rug every month or so and vacuum underneath to prevent grit from grinding into the fibres from below.
If you don't own a vacuum, a stiff broom works in a pinch. Sweep in one direction, then lift the rug and shake it outdoors. It's not as thorough, but it's far better than nothing.
Dealing with Spills
The golden rule: blot, don't rub. When something spills, grab a clean cloth or paper towel and press firmly onto the spill to absorb the liquid. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the fibres and can spread it.
For most spills on polypropylene rugs, a solution of warm water with a small amount of dish soap works well. Apply it to the stain with a cloth, blot, rinse with clean water, and blot again until dry. For tougher stains like coffee or juice, add a tablespoon of white vinegar to the mix.
Deep Cleaning
Every 6–12 months, give your rug a deeper clean. You have two options: DIY or professional.
For DIY, take the rug outdoors on a sunny day. Mix warm water with a mild detergent (not bleach), scrub gently with a soft brush, then rinse thoroughly with a hose or buckets of clean water. Hang it over a fence or railing to dry completely before bringing it back inside. In Nairobi's sun, this usually takes 4–6 hours.
For professional cleaning, most carpet cleaning services in Nairobi charge KSh 500–1,500 depending on the rug size. This is worth it annually, especially for high-traffic rugs.
Preventing Wear
Rotate your rug 180 degrees every 3–6 months. This distributes foot traffic evenly and prevents one side from wearing faster than the other — especially important if your rug sits near a doorway or under a frequently used chair.
If your rug sits on a hard floor (tiles, wood, or terrazzo), use a rug pad underneath. This prevents slipping, reduces wear, and adds cushioning underfoot. Rug pads are available in most hardware shops in Nairobi for KSh 500–2,000.
Sun Fading
Kenya's equatorial sun is strong. If your rug sits in direct sunlight for hours daily, the colours will eventually fade. Use curtains or blinds during peak sun hours (11am–3pm), or rearrange the rug so different sections get the sun exposure over time.
