Buying an area rug online in Kenya is easy — picking the right size is the tricky part. A rug that's too small can make a room feel disjointed, while one that's too big overwhelms the space. This guide covers the three most common sizes available in Kenya and which rooms they work best in.
The Three Standard Sizes
Most area rugs sold in Kenya come in three sizes: 5 by 8 feet (152 × 244 cm), 6 by 9 feet (183 × 274 cm), and 7 by 10 feet (213 × 305 cm). These cover the majority of room layouts in typical Nairobi apartments and houses.
Living Room Rules
The most common approach is to place your rug so the front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on it. This "front legs on" technique anchors the seating area and makes the room feel pulled together without requiring the largest possible rug.
For a small sitting area — think a two-seater sofa and one armchair in a room around 3 by 4 metres — a 5×8 rug works well. If your living room is around 4 by 5 metres with a full sofa set, go with a 6×9. For larger, open-plan living areas, a 7×10 gives you the coverage you need.
Leave at least 30 centimetres of bare floor between the rug edge and the wall. This frames the rug and makes the room look intentional rather than like the rug was dropped in as an afterthought.
Bedroom Placement
The classic bedroom rug placement is to slide the rug under the bottom two-thirds of the bed, so it extends on both sides and at the foot. When you step out of bed, your feet should land on rug, not bare floor.
For a standard double bed, a 5×8 works. Queen beds pair well with a 6×9, and if you have a king bed, a 7×10 gives you that generous extension on all sides.
Dining Room Sizing
Dining rugs need to be big enough that chairs remain on the rug even when pulled out for sitting. The rule of thumb: add 60 centimetres (about 2 feet) to each side of your table's dimensions.
A 4-seater dining table typically needs a 6×9 rug underneath. For 6-seater tables or larger, a 7×10 is the safer choice.

Pro Tip: Tape It Out
Before you buy, use masking tape to mark the rug dimensions on your floor. Live with it for a day — sit on the sofa, pull out a dining chair, walk around the bed. You'll know immediately if the size feels right.
